Becoming a personal representative in a probate action is both an honor and a significant responsibility. When a loved one passes away, the court appoints a personal representative to manage and settle the estate according to the will—or, if there is no will, under state law. This role includes gathering and protecting assets, notifying heirs and creditors, paying valid debts, and ensuring court deadlines and filings are met. For many people, this is their first experience with probate, and the process can feel overwhelming—especially while navigating grief, family relationships, and unfamiliar legal requirements.
One of the most complex responsibilities often involves managing and selling real estate owned by the estate.
